Wisconsin State CX Championships

30-min (38 min) cyclocross race
Hales Corners, Wisc.
11/22/09

And thus ends the 2009 racing season.

What started on a cold, gray, day in Illionis back in March, ended 8 months later on a sunny, warm, day on a slick course in Hales Corners, Wisc.

What a ride.

Cat. 4 CX is  ONLY 30 min of racing

Julie and I talked briefly about the season last night over dinner and while this isn’t a full accounting of the season, it brought to light the highs and lows (this is realtive, because even “bad” days were still good!) of the 2009 campaign.

My highs: A 5th place finish in the 35-mile RR at Grandview; and working with Mike Buelter and Chris Mueller to get Colbeth a shot at the win at the Minnesota State RR.

My lows: Getting dropped in the Belleville RR with five miles to go (I learned my biggest lesson of the season in that race, so even “bad” turned out to be “good” later); and getting the crap kicked out of me on our pre-ride of the 24/9 course in Wausau. That HURT!

My season ended with a 47th place finish in the Wisconsin State CX. I was a backmarker all day after getting stuck behind a couple guys in the sand pit (very rideable) at the start of the race. I lost a lot of positions there, but that’s the breaks of the game and it’s not like I went from a shot at winning to riding around at the back, I would have been mid-field at best anyway.

Uphill barrier

So I chased Mark Schindel and a few others around most of the event before he got away (on a flat tire none the less). It was another fun day of CX on a fun (but greasy) course.

This was a pretty common sight most of the race

I hope to have some new CX gear for 2010 so stay tuned and look for a video from the WI CX Champopnship in the next few days.

Well, that’s it folks. We’ll be back racing in a four months.

Now I just hope the snow holds off long enough to get in a few more weekends of riding outside.

'Cossing Over: The Movie!

Only real excitement this week was finishing up and posting a short doc I made from the CX last weekend and some video I shot earlier this fall. It captures some of the mayhem of the sport pretty well, I think.

Don’t take the subtitle to the movie personally, that’s just my nod to Dr. Strangelove (or how I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)

I was pretty surprised when USA Cycling picked the video up on their Facebook page mid-week. That was pretty cool. Anyway, here’s the vid.

Enjoy!

Kletzsch Park CX

30-min (ended up being 42-min) Cyclocross race
Glendale, Wisc.
11/14/09

I finally had a ride I was happy with Saturday at Kletzsch Park in Glendale (just outside Milwaukee) during the CX race there Saturday.

The course was fast and had a number of places to recover after the tough (but fun ) run-up and I managed a 31st place finish (out of 45 or so riders), but I felt like I rode pretty well and I had a blast.

Time to get back on

Next week is the state CX Championship, and I plan on riding. The downside is that will be the last race of 2009. Then it’s about months until the start of the 2010 racing season....

I chased this guy most of the race

The top of the run-up at Kletzsch Park was just was CX embodies, lots of fans, cowbells, beer and people with bikes suffering.

To be honest I have no idea if that’s what it was like during the Cat. 4 race as I didn't notice much around me other than that I was finally at the top of the hill and it was time to remount. But during the Cat. 3 race I had time to soak it in (film the mayhem) and participate in it with a pair of new cowbells just bought last week.

New cowbells in action - no more envy

Look for a short CX movie later this week, I got some nice interviews with participants yesterday, so it should be a fun little video. Working title is “’Crossing Over.”

Cowbell envy

Julie said my last blog was “boring.”

Sheesh, what does she want a three-ring circus of flaming monkeys? I’m afraid this one won't thrill her either, but what can I say, it’s that time of year.

I think the most exciting this that will happen this week is when she goes to Fleet Farm to get a larger cowbell for our cyclocross racing and viewing the next two weekends.

Someone had a louder cow bell than mine two weeks ago and I was dismayed. I decided we need a real cowbell. If I had time I’d get one from Belgium, but this should work fine. Look for a photo of the new bell in action this weekend in Milwaukee.

On another note, a team photo made it into Hammer Nutrition’s publication “Endurance News.” Pretty cool seeing the team in print. Hammer’s been great to us, supplying product for both our events and is extremely easy to work with.

Nov. weather that's hard to beat

That’s the kind of weekend that makes you realize how much fun this sport can be.

Twenty seven miles on the road Saturday morning, then another 36 Sunday followed by 20 miles of mountain biking in the afternoon. -- all with temperatures in ranges that don't require oodles of clothing to ride.

Sunday AM crew -- Mark Schindel, Julie, Me

So, needless to say, great weather made for a great weekend of riding, made better by the fact I’ve been stuck in the basement for the last two weeks.

Sunday PM crew - Mike Buelter, Schindel, me

I hope it’s this nice again next weekend (forecast looks like temps in the mid- to high-40s Saturday) for the race in Milwaukee and whatever riding we choose to do on Sunday.

Big Ring Flyers season in review

With only three (maybe four) more weekends of racing left for the team, I put together a pair of season wrap up videos. One is a 4 min. version for our sponsors and the other is a “directors cut” that runs just a tad over 10 min.

They may both appear the same in the first few minutes, but they are very different after that.

Looks like an off weekend for me racing this weekend, though it’s likely we’ll head to Madison Saturday to check out TT bikes for Julie and I’ll be doing some sort of ad hoc CX riding in Green Bay Sunday.

Failing that, I’ll head out to the camp for one last MTB ride on the trials there before it closes for the season Sunday night.

Hard to fathom that Thanksgiving is a mere three weeks away.

Halloween Classic CX

30-min cyclocross race
Milwaukee, Wisc.
10/31/09

It’s pretty hard to not have fun when you’re hanging around a couple hundred cyclocross racers on Halloween day -- and a good number of them are in costume.

I raced the Halloween Classic CX race in Washington Park in Milwaukee Saturday finishing 70 of about 96 registered riders in the Cat. 4 race. The course was pretty sweet -- flowing and fast in some sections, hard in others, and downright muddy at the start/finish.

Designers had a few unique features built in including two sets of triple barriers (including one “bloody” set going up hill), and a small coffin barrier that was pretty easy to ride over (others bunny hopped it while still others chose to dismount and treat it like a barrier.)

I really had a lot of fun in this race chasing a group of three or four riders for most of the race, before losing them on the last lap, thanks in part to my wheel washing out on a muddy 180-degree turn shortly before the triple barriers on the hill and a big blob of mud that missed my sunglasses and ended up right in my eye at the start of the last lap.

It’s hard riding with one eye shut for a minute or two.

Both those “hardships” cost me a few places, but what’s the difference between 67 and 70? The answer: Who cares! I had a ton of fun.

Needless to say my costume is loosely based on a modern fighter pilot. The flight suit is British and the patches were pulled from my personal collection (the units loosely represent an EA-6B electronic warfare aircraft crew member).

The “nose” art on the right side of my time trial helmet and the kill markings on the left (which had the names of the previous CX races I’ve done written on them a-la marking in Korea and Vietnam) were paper and simply taped on to the helmet.

We hung out for a few hours after my race cheering on other riders. That was a ton of fun as well, as just about everyone seemed to be enjoying the day and making the most of the Halloween spirit.

This guy passed me on the last lap...

One of our new team members, LeRoy Walters, opted to ride the Cat. 4  race at the last minute on Friday afternoon. So he used Julie’s mountain bike and did pretty well for his first event, finishing 41st and passing me with a wide grin on the first lap. No question he’ll do better in the future now that he knows what to expect, but he had a pretty good out on the course.

Walters and Phelps

We hit a few bike stores on the way home, but Julie didn't get to actually ride anything (which is what she wanted to do) so our frustrating search to try to get her on some of the bikes she'd like to buy continues....

She and I may do an odd-ball off-road duathlon Saturday here in Green bay. She’ll run the 5K trail race portion of the event and I’ll do the 20-mile mountain bike section. Should be a fun day and something different.

Here are a few more costume photos taken by Mark Schindel, check his site (www.markschindel.com) out for a few more photos from the event:
